A women’s cooperative established towards strengthening resilience and solidarity of refugee women and host communities in Turkey
 
The Project “Strengthening the Resilience of Syrian Women and Girls and Host Communities” is being implemented in Gaziantep, Turkey by UN Women, the ILO and SGDD-ASAM since 2018. The project aims to empower Syrian and other refugee women and girls and contribute to their self-reliance and co-existence with women in the host communities. After a series of basic life skills and occupational training courses and preparatory work at the SADA Women Development and Solidarity Centre, the ‘SADA Women’s Cooperative’ was established with the participation of Turkish, Syrians and Afghan women members to advance business activities in shoe-upping, packaging, textiles and food processing and catering.

The ILO Office in Algiers for Maghreb countries released a video on the A’AMAL project showcasing testimonies of key stakeholders and beneficiaries of the project. The project, co-funded by the Algerian Government and the European Union under the Youth and Employability Support Programme (PAJE) and implemented by the ILO, aims to strengthen capacities, synergies and collaboration among local actors, more specifically civil society associations, for the professional integration of young people in Algeria. More
 
Call for expression of interest: Consultants database on cooperative and SSE development
 
The ILO's Cooperatives Unit (COOP) is updating its database of potential consultants or companies on cooperatives and SSE development. Interested experts or organisations that wish to be included in the database are invited to submit relevant documents to the Unit by 24 May 2019. More

Points of Consensus adopted by the ILO’s first ever meeting on e-waste management mentions the role of cooperatives and the wider SSE
 
The Global Dialogue Forum on Decent Work in the Management of Electrical and Electronic Waste (e-waste) was held in Geneva with the participation of representatives from governments, employers’ and workers’ organizations, and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations. The points of Consensus adopted by the Forum mention the role of cooperatives and the wider SSE enterprises in promoting the rights of workers in the informal e-waste economy and creating decent work opportunities and encourage the development and implementation of policies and measures to promote their role. More

Australian Parliament passes reforms for cooperatives and mutuals
 
The Australian Parliament passed the Treasury Laws Amendment (Mutual Reforms) Act 2019, which is said to be the first positive change to the Corporations Act for mutuals in 18 years. The amendment includes: introducing a definition of 'mutual entity' as part of a diverse economy; and providing for mutual capital instruments as a new bespoke capital instrument for mutual entities. Compartir magazine: An interview on ILO’s work on cooperatives in the health sector
 
An interview with ILO’s Cooperative Unit Manager on the organization’s work on cooperatives, particularly in the health sector, was published in the latest issue of Magazine Compartir by the Espriu Foundation, the second largest health cooperative network in the world with more than 180 thousand members and around 40,000 health workers in Spain. The Spanish version will soon be followed by the English version of the magazine. More
