| ILO-supported National Cooperative Policy of Sri Lanka is adopted |

After a long period of consultations involving multiple stakeholders, the first-ever national policy on cooperatives in Sri Lanka was finalized and adopted by the cabinet. The ILO is committed to continuing its support in the implementation of the policy. The cooperative movement has a history of over hundred years in Sri Lanka. More recently, it has played a crucial role in the economic development efforts in the north of the country.

| A first step towards improving working conditions of waste pickers in Senegal |
| |
Under the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE), the ILO is supporting an initiative to improve working conditions in the waste management sector, by helping to organize informal economy workers into cooperatives. As an initial step, a two-day workshop was organized in Dakar with representatives from key national institutions and a waste collectors’ association. More

| Launch of Facilitator's Guides of Think.Coop and Start.Coop |
| |
Facilitator’s Guides of ILO’s Think.Coop – an orientation tool on the cooperative business model – and Start.Coop – a step-by-step guide on launching a cooperative in a participatory manner – are now available in English. Both Think.Coop and Start.Coop packages contain: a training guide; a facilitator’s guide; and two power point presentations that can be used for training of facilitators and direct beneficiaries.

My.Coop Smart, an online self-paced learning tool of My.Coop – Managing your agricultural cooperatives, has been launched. This latest addition to the My.Coop family, My.Coop Smart, introduces the core contents of My.Coop modules through a dynamic and smartphone compatible interface. | The 10th edition of the ILO-JCCU study tour completed successfully |
| |
The ILO and the Japanese Consumers' Co-operative Union (JCCU) African Cooperative Leaders Study Tour has been completed successfully with five participants from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Nigeria. On the occasion of the ILO Centenary, the programme included emerging cooperative responses to key trends in the world of work, including climate change, technological advances, and ageing population. On the last day, a public conference on the African cooperative movement and the future of work was organized with the participation of Ambassador of Nigeria to Japan and officials of Kenyan, Tanzanian and Ugandan Embassies to Japan. More elaborate reflections on the study tour from the participant will be forthcoming in the October 2019 newsletter.

| ILO participates in the 15th International Fair Trade Summit in Lima |

The Summit brought together more than 300 participants from fair trade businesses and associations, development cooperation agencies, and local governments interested in supporting the fair trade initiative. | ILO’s message for the Platform Cooperativism Symposium in Tokyo |

Organized by the Japan Co-operative Alliance (JCA) in collaboration with the University of Tokyo, the symposium brought together over 120 participants from trade unions, cooperatives, academics and the media. ILO Cooperatives Unit Manager contributed to the event through a video message on the relevance of the cooperative model in improving working conditions of workers in the platform economy. More

WeOwnIt, a US start-up non-profit that is building a national network for all types of cooperatives, and New Economy Coalition, a US network of non-profits working for sustainable economic development, have released a toolkit aimed at promoting understanding on the role of rural electric cooperatives. The toolkit includes information on the state and scope of rural electric cooperatives across the country, case studies, organizing materials and guides on member engagement and cooperative finance.
