ILO meets a Turkish social cooperative connecting people’s needs through an online platform

On July 12, members from the Needs Map (Ihtiyac Haritasi in Turkish) cooperative visited ILO Headquarters in Geneva to present their work and to explore the possibility of replication of their model in other parts of the world. Needs Map, is a workers’ cooperative that uses an online map platform to connect individuals and institutions that need support with those that want to contribute their time or goods. First launched two years ago, it has been used to match more than half a million needs, including books, paperwork, writing materials, and clothing for school children particularly in Turkey’s eastern provinces. Other populations such as refugees and cancer patients have also benefited from this social cooperative initiative. The need for a website in English, and research that documents their model were among the discussion points. It was agreed that there may be potential to test this platform application developed through a cooperative governance model and applied successfully in Turkey and in other middle-income countries.
