Highlights on the 2017 International Day of Cooperatives

ILO celebrates 2017 IDC by focusing on workers in the informal economy

For the occasion of the 2017 IDC, the ILO organised an event on the role and potential of cooperatives in providing a pathway to formalization for those working in the informal economy. Simel Esim, Head of ILO COOP, presented on the main findings of the recent ILO-WIEGO report on cooperation among home-based workers and waste pickers. WIEGO’s waste specialist Sonia Maria Dias presented the case of waste picker organizations in Brazil and discussed future challenges. >>Check out the full story and presentations here.


COPAC held an observance of 2017 IDC at the UN on the role of cooperatives in advancing inclusive development

On 14 July, COPAC hosted an observance of the 2017 IDC at the United Nations in New York during the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. Vinicius Pinheiro, Special Representative to the UN and Director of the ILO Office for the UN, moderated the event as Chair of COPAC and presented on the role of cooperatives to promote inclusive development in his opening remarks. The event featured high-level speakers from COPAC’s membership, cooperatives in the field and Permanent Representations to the UN. ICA message for 2017 IDC

How the world celebrated 2017 IDC

The 2017 IDC was observed around the world from India and Liberia to countries in the AmericasThe Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Co-operation published a new policy brief for IDC that underlines the need of a new generation of agricultural cooperatives to promote and facilitate the development of local and inclusive agribusiness in Africa. The celebrations were not only observed by members of the cooperative movement but also other social movements and political leaders.

Meeting updates

ILO Social and Solidarity Economy Academy in Seoul

The 8th edition of the ILO SSE Academy took place in Seoul, the Republic of Korea from 26 to 30 June. Over 150 participants from more than 30 countries exchanged their experiences, best practices and challenges under the theme “Innovative ecosystems for SSE public policies: A contribution to the future of work”.
