African cooperative leaders explore the diverse businesses of Japanese cooperatives

The 8th edition of the ILO/Japanese Consumers' Cooperative Union (JCCU) Study Tour for African Cooperative Leaders took place in Japan from 29 August to 6 September with participants from Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and Swaziland who were joined by representatives of ICA Africa and ILO COOP Unit. Their observations on Japanese cooperatives’ practices will no doubt be used toward developing cooperative movements in their own countries. >>Check out the highlights and the observations of the participants and the organizers.

ILO pilots an orientation tool on cooperation - "Think.Coop" in Cambodia

On 25 August, a new ILO orientation tool on the cooperative business model was piloted in Cambodia. Supported by IDEA, the local partner organization, the training brought together over 25 participants to discuss and learn about the benefits of cooperation for improving livelihoods and economic opportunities. >>More


Improving livelihoods through cooperatives: ILO LEED project in Northern Sri Lanka

Since 2010, the ILO has worked with cooperatives in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka through the Local Empowerment through Economic Development (LEED) project aiming at poverty reduction, sustainable job creation and peacebuilding for vulnerable groups in conflict-affected populations in the region. Emerging cooperative responses to gig economy in Asia

On 19 September, Professor Jack Qiu from the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong spoke at the ILO’s RESEARCH Department seminar series in Geneva. The session, titled “Reflexive Actions Within and Beyond the Gig Economy” was chaired by ILO’s Cooperative Unit Manager. The presentation and the subsequent discussion included reflections on worker cooperatives, platform cooperatives and other social and solidarity economy response strategies. >>More


ILO joins a high-level side event at the 72nd UN General Assembly on financing for SSE

On 19 September, France, on behalf of the International Leading Group on Social and Solidarity Economy (ILGSSE), organized a high-level event in coordination with the association SSE International Forum, on the margins of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly which brought together States, international institutions as well as civil society and private organizations. The event focused on financing for social and solidarity economy (SSE) as a lever to finance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and concluded with the adoption of a related position paper. Ms Manuela Tomei, ILO Director at the Conditions of Work and Employment Department, participated as a speaker at the event and presented the work of the ILO on SSE as guided by ILO Promotion of Cooperatives Recommendation, 2002 (No. 193) and 2008 ILO Declaration on Social Justice, among others. >>More↗


ILO presents on the role of cooperatives in overcoming refugee and migrant precarity at a side event of the 36th Session of the Human Rights Council

On 20 September, a seminar on "Overcoming Refugee and Migrant Precarity: What Role for Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE)" was organized by the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) and the University of Geneva as an official side event of the 36th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. The ILO participated in the event presenting on the role of cooperatives in providing basic services (housing, food, clothing and language skills) as well as labour market integration of migrants and refugees. >>More


ILO participates in an event to mark the 70th anniversary of the French general law on cooperatives

On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Law of 10 September 1947 defining cooperative status, Coop FR organized an awareness-raising event on cooperative initiatives. A dialogue between international, European and Greek cooperative and SSE leaders

A one-day seminar on "Cooperatives and the Social and Solidarity Economy in Greece and around the world" was organized by the KAPA network in Greece at the Agricultural University of Athens on 23 September. The ILO’s Director of Enterprises Department participated in the event. He shared the work of the ILO on cooperatives and other social and solidarity economy enterprises including research, policy advisory services, and capacity building often delivered through development cooperation initiatives. >>More

CICOPA’s second global report “Cooperatives and Employment” is out

CICOPA published its second global report on “Cooperatives and Employment”. Based on data from 156 countries, the updated estimate shows employment in or within the scope of cooperatives concerns at least 279.4 million people, 9.46 per cent of the world’s employed population. >>More
