ILO/COPAC new joint research series

The ILO and other members of COPAC have launched a series on “Countries in Focus on Statistics of Cooperatives” as part of a larger initiative to increase understanding on how countries around the world produce and use statistics on cooperatives. Case studies for Canada, Russia, the United Kingdom, the Philippines, and Brazil are now available.

SSE is identified as a key strategy in the Tunisia DWCP

On 21 July, the ILO participated in the signing ceremony of the 2017-2022 Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP) for Tunisia along with the Government of Tunisia, the Union Générale Tunisienne des Travailleurs (UGTT), and the Union Tunisienne de l’Industrie, du Commerce et de l’Artisanat (Utica). The DWCP highlights five national priority areas. The first priority is to promote “Economic growth and regional development; global, sustainable and balanced growth in-between the different regions”. Among the key strategies under this priority area is the development of a strong social and solidarity economy (SSE), which is seen as essential for the reduction of social inequalities. Particular efforts are being made through the ILO PROMESS project which assists the government, social partners and SSE actors to establish a conductive legal and institutional environment for SSE development in Tunisia. >>More
My.Coop gets a provincial adaptation in Peru

For the first time since it was launched in 2012, the My.Coop – Managing your agricultural cooperative training package was adapted at the provincial level in the San Martín region of Peru. After the completion of the training of trainers’ workshops, My.Coop will be rolled out in the region in order to support a number of coffee and cacao cooperatives toward better management practices. >>More
Cooperative networking and funding event held in Trinidad and Tobago
On 26 July, the Ministry of Labour and Small Enterprise Development of Trinidad and Tobago held a “Co-operative Networking and Funding Fair” in Port-of-Spain as a commemoration of the International Day of Cooperatives. Under the theme of "Cooperation among Cooperatives", delegates from non-financial cooperatives pitched project ideas to funders from local financial cooperatives, using the knowledge and experience obtained at the previous ILO workshops. Ida Le Blanc, General Secretary for National Union of Domestic Workers (NUDE), also participated in the event to present on the objectives and services of their Service Workers Centre Cooperative Society (SWCC). >>More↗

New report by GIWPS on how cooperatives empower female artisan home-based workers

On 18 July, the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace, and Security (GIWPS) in Washington, D.C. released a new report “Cooperative Connections: Connecting Female Artisan Home-Based Workers through Women's Cooperatives in Jakarta, Indonesia" supported by the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. The study provides new evidence on how cooperatives can support women’s economic empowerment by offering opportunities for saving and borrowing, health services, education and the potential to leverage collective voice. >>Read more on the report↗
