Strengthening Agricultural Cooperatives in Viet Nam

In partnership with the Viet Nam Cooperative Alliance (VCA) and Agriterra, the ILO organized a My.Coop training of trainers workshop in February 2017. Participants from the VCA, farmers’ organizations, vocational training institutions, and national and local government agencies engaged in the workshop to learn about the ways to improve entrepreneurship and management skills in agricultural cooperatives. >>Read more.
Cooperative Legislation and Policy Discussions in the First Quarter of 2017

Palestinian Prime Minister Launches Cooperative Sector Strategy
On 13 February, the Palestinian cooperative strategy was launched by the Palestinian Prime Minister, Mr Rami Hamdallah. With 200 participants from ministries, cooperatives, CSOs and international organizations, new cooperative strategies prepared by the Palestinian Directorate of Cooperatives, with support from the ILO, were presented and discussed. The commitment and engagement of the ILO representatives in the Jerusalem office, Mounir Kleibo and Rasha El Shurafa has been critical to promoting cooperatives as means of implementation in advancing the decent work agenda in the oPt. >>Read more.

In Asia, during the first quarter of 2017, discussions on reviews on cooperative policies and legislations have been underway in several countries: Iran, Malaysia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Republic of Korea.
Sri Lankan Cooperative Receives the First Fair Trade Certificate in the Country for Red Lady Papaya
Vavuniya North Fruit Growers Cooperative Union became the first cooperative in Sri Lanka to receive a fair trade certificate for its red lady papayas. The ILO-supported LEED project, funded by Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia (DAFT) has promoted building of market systems that provide more equitable return to producers and workers in conflict-affected populations in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. >>Read more.

Meeting Update
ILO and Seoul City Sign an Agreement for the next SSE Academy

In February 2017, the ILO and the city of Seoul, Republic of Korea, signed an agreement for the next ILO Social and Solidarity Economy Academy. The Academy will take place at the Seoul National University from 26th to 30th of June 2017.

ILO Regional Office Participates in the ICA Sub-Regional Conference at the Dead Sea

ILO Regional Office for Arab States participated in the sub-regional ‘Enhance Co-operative Linkages’ meeting, organized by the ICA Regional Office for Asia Pacific in Dead Sea, Jordan, in February 2017. The meeting aimed to trigger potential synergies in development cooperation and build relationships with civil society actors. In the medium to longer term, ICA AP hopes to institute mechanisms to understand policies and priorities on cooperatives and explore opportunities for international cooperative trade and creation of decent jobs. >> Read more.

New ILO Report: Providing Care through Cooperatives 2: Literature Review and Case Studies

This report was produced as part of a research initiative on the provision of care through cooperatives. The second part of the research complements the findings of an earlier report that focused on findings from survey and interviews. The new report presents 16 brief case studies of cooperatives from all the continents providing care, in addition to a literature review. >> Read more.
