“Formalize Your Business” training for small enterprises now available for Senegal and The Gambia
 
The Formalize Your Business training has now been developed for Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Senegal, in collaboration with a variety of constituents. The training materials are based on country-specific information and exercises. They aim to sensitize entrepreneurs on the importance of formalization, how to achieve it, and how to deal with the challenges of formalizing micro and small enterprises. The training also raises awareness on the relevance of complying with existing laws as a formalized business. An adaptation toolkit for the training is currently in development and will be available in English and French. Read more

Expanding access to finance for refugees and host communities in Iraq
 
As part of the ILO’s PROSPECT programme, the ILO social Finance have signed an agreement with Al-Thiqa, a microfinance organization in Iraq. Under this agreement, start-up and existing entrepreneurs will benefit from non-financial services, including business management and financial education, helping them to manage their enterprises, finances and their relationship with financial institutions. This intervention is the first of its kind in Iraq reaching encamped and urban refugees and it builds upon our ongoing financial inclusion model with the Central Bank of Iraq. Read more

The ‘Guidelines concerning Statistics of Cooperatives’ were adopted at the 20th International Conference of Labour Statisticians (ICLS) in October 2018, which were then approved by the Governing Body of the ILO in March 2019. The guidelines are a first step toward an international norm on statistics of cooperatives. The culture and creative sector (CCS), includes music production, movies, theatres and radio broadcasting, with many artists in the sector working in informal and precarious arrangements. Social and solidarity economy (SSE) units can provide value and principle based services and livelihoods options to CCS workers. In light of the upcoming general discussion on SSE for a human-centred future of work at the 110th Session of the International Labour Conference, this brief highlights how SSE units in the CCS can contribute to advancing rights at work, improving quality of jobs, ensuring access to social protection, and fostering local economic development. Read more
