ILO Just Energy Transition Innovation Challenge
 
In 2021, energy and jobs have emerged as prominent issues within most national and international agendas, underscoring the effects of the COVID-19 crisis and debates on recovery models and mounting awareness of the need for ambitious climate action. In this context, and as part of the milestones to reach the targets of the Paris Agreement, the ILO is launching its first-ever just transition innovation challenge, specifically addressing energy transitions. The objective of the Challenge is to identify, enhance, test and disseminate high-potential policy ideas and solutions that promote a just transition for all, breaking from business-as-usual. The winners will be awarded technical assistance equivalent to the value up to 50.000 USD. Read more

The ILO participated in the 10th Annual Forum on Business and human rights
 
The 10th Annual Forum on Business and human rights took place from 29 November to 1 December 2021. The ILO Director-General Guy Ryder spoke in a special session on the legacy of professor John Ruggie, the architect of the UN “protect, respect, remedy” framework on business and human rights and its Guiding Principles. Githa Roelans, Head of ILO Multinational Enterprises and Enterprise Engagement Unit, shared observations on the UNGPs' roadmap for the next decade during an interagency panel. Yuki Arai, Director of the ILO Country Office for Argentina, spoke in a panel on Localizing the UNGPs: how the UN is engaging for positive change on the groundRead more

“Formalize Your Business” training programme for enterprises
 
Formalize Your Business is a training course designed to support the transition of informal enterprises to the formal economy. The training aims to sensitize entrepreneurs on the importance of formalization, how to achieve it, and how to deal with the challenges of formalizing micro and small enterprises. It also raises awareness on the relevance of complying with existing laws as a formalized business. Read more

First Cohort of Facilitators trained on Gender-Self Assessment Process for Financial and Non-Financial Service Providers
 
The first WE-Check (a gender-sensitive self-assessment tool for service providers) online self-guided training for facilitators successfully took place from November 15 to December 3, 2022. 22 participants (20 women, 2 men) from Nigeria, Cameroon, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand were selected to take part and become the first cohort of facilitators. In 2022, 15 facilitators should be completing their certification by accompanying service providers in their journey to improving their service delivery to women entrepreneurs. Read more

Capacity building on enterprise formalization for constituents in West Africa
 
From 14 October to 2 December 2021, the ILO and ITC-ILO partnered on an eight-week online learning course on enterprise formalization for constituents in West Africa. The modular training targeted participants from Senegal and Ivory Coast and covered issues such as simplifying business registration and compliance as well as designing effective incentives for formalization. Read more

The United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on Social and Solidarity Economy (UNTFSSE) held a technical symposium from 6 to 10 December 2021. Gender and Entrepreneurship in Latin America
 
Between 2020 and 2021 the network of  Gender and Entrepreneurship (GET Ahead) Trainers and Lead Trainers in Latin America saw a boost in numbers. In the last six months of 2021, over 500 women entrepreneurs were supported and the region now counts with 12 certified GET Ahead Trainers and 4 Lead Trainers. To celebrate this achievement, the ILO-WED Team organized a webinar on December 7 where members of the network shared experiences, highlighting some of the strengths of the gender-sensitive entrepreneurship training programme. Read more (in Spanish)

Review of the EESE Action Plans for Moldova in the context of the COVID-19 crisis
 
The ILO Decent Work Team for Central and Eastern Europe and the Country Office for Moldova commissioned in 2018 - 2019 the “Enabling Environment for Sustainable Enterprises" assessment. The report, together with its conclusions and recommendations, was validated during a tripartite workshop in 2019. As a follow up to this workshop and the completion and publication of the report, a more thorough consultation process had to take place to refine and elaborate more in details the action plans on the priority areas and identify funding opportunities. The goal of this Report is to complete the action plans taking into consideration the COVID-19 context. Read more

Financial education: three ToTs in Ethiopia, Jordan and the Philippines in January
The ILO’s global programme on financial education will have a promising start to the new year with three training of trainers (ToTs) planned in January.

Employment injury schemes and the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases
