Theory of change: enterprise formalization for decent work
 
Enterprise formalization means bringing enterprises under the regulation with the advantages and obligations that this entails. In order to measure informality among economic units, it is necessary to determine a) to what extent economic units are registered with the relevant agencies at the national level, and b) to what extent they comply with the regulations that apply to them. Women’s Entrepreneurship Accelerator Celebrates Second Anniversary
 
At a two year celebratory event of the Women’s Entrepreneurship Accelerator, a partnership brining ILO, four other UN Agencies and the multinational Marky Kay to impact 5 million women around the world by 2030, the ILO Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Vinicius Pinheiro called on the need for partnerships and networks of women entrepreneurs across regions to ensure building forward from the pandemic. Blue or pink, boy or girl? How Gender Biases Influence Work Environments
 
The SCORE Program in Colombia conducted an experiment by inviting over 700 people from different enterprises, unions and public entities to answer whether a baby in the photograph shown was a girl or a boy. This experiment was aimed at uncovering unconscious gender biases and stereotypes that help understand discrimination, including wage gaps and unemployment in the world of work today. Read more

Jordanian trainer embarks on cooperative management training initiative, supported by the ILO

Business formalization training for young agripreneurs from Nigeria, Rwanda and Uganda
 
On 15 and 17 September 2021, the ILO delivered two trainings on business formalization for young agripreneurs that operate in the agricultural value chains in Nigeria, Rwanda and Uganda. The 120 participants successfully applied to become eligible for the 2021 Green Agribusiness Fund (GAF). The business formalization training marked the start of the capacity building initiative under the GAF Academy. Read more

Tripartite coordination mechanism on business growth, investment and decent jobs
 
This document presents a framework that the ILO and Ghana’s tripartite stakeholders prepared to address barriers that hinder the creation and growth of sustainable enterprises. The document argues that the inadequate business environment is a fundamental obstacle to business development and the creation of formal jobs in Ghana. The proposal presents a Tripartite Coordination Mechanism (TCM) on the business environment that will champion interventions to respond to the pandemic’s negative impact on enterprises, and advocate for concrete improvements in the business environment. Read more

International labour standards and corporate social responsibility: the labour dimension of human rights due diligence
This course aims to strengthen the capacity of participants to understand the principles of international labour standards as they relate to company operations (including due diligence related to labour rights) and how those principles can be most effectively implemented in company operations. The course will be offered online through the ITCILO e-campus over a period of 4 weeks and includes technical learning webinars allowing for interactions with experts and co-participants, self-guided learning and short task-oriented assignments.

Financial education programme design and implementation: a course for policy-makers and practitioners
This course focuses on designing and implementing financial education strategies. Participants will discuss experiences, lessons learned and international practical knowledge gained in this field. They will be provided with relevant tools, frameworks and instruments, and will consider the best practices applied by various institutions and actors globally. As an outcome of the course, participants will design financial-education outreach strategies for various target groups, produce specific action plans, and prepare for implementation.

Environmental challenges, including climate change, are changing the way businesses work, either because they are forced to or because they proactively seek to. This training course enhances the skills of policy-makers and practitioners in assessing and designing policies to improve productivity and working conditions in SMEs. Entrepreneurship games through Virtual Reality: Training of Trainers

This training of trainers combines Virtual Reality with entrepreneurship games. It is designed for entrepreneurship trainers and educators who see the potential of both gamification and VR. This very first ToT will enable participants to: 1) get to know the ILO entrepreneurship games, 2) play and interact with their peers in the VR space, 3) use the entrepreneurship games in future face-to-face or VR trainings. This free course assists SMEs in better understanding the increased expectations from international buyers and consuming countries on responsible business. SMEs can learn in a practical way how to improve their compliance with national legislation and adherence to principles of International Labour Standards, and come to realize that respecting workers' rights and improving working conditions can be part of a competitive business strategy.
