Statement by the ILO Deputy Director-General for Policy for the International Day of Cooperatives - 3 July 2021
 
The ILO Deputy Director for Policy Portfolio, Martha Newton, has issued a statement on the occasion of the International Day of Cooperatives, celebrated on the first Saturday of July every year. Her message was featured at a High Level Political Forum (HLPF) side event organized by the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC)  on July 2nd along with other senior representatives of UN agencies and the President of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA). She noted in her presentation, that “around the pandemic cooperatives, and other social and solidarity economy institutions have stepped up to support their members and communities across sectors and regions”. She emphasized that in moving forward beyond the pandemic, it will be important that cooperatives are not only recognized as social partners for emergency response, but also as economic actors that for the longer term in building more resilient communities and strengthening local economies. ILO DG responds to questions from the ICA in the lead up to the World Cooperative Congress where he will be a speaker
 
In the lead up to his presentation at the World Cooperative Congress in December 2021, the ILO DG Guy Ryder answered questions from the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) including the relationship between the ILO and the cooperative movement. He noted ways cooperatives can be instrumental in advancing the ILO’s human-centred future of work agenda, rebuilding economies and societies after COVID19, and in providing alternative organizing strategies and business models for workers in the platform economy. More

Jordan launches national strategy for the cooperative movement, with ILO support
 
The strategy, launched under the patronage of the Prime Minister, aims to build a prosperous, autonomous, inclusive and self-reliant cooperative movement in Jordan. The Jordan Cooperative Corporation (JCC), with the support of the International Labour Organization (ILO), has launched a national strategy for the cooperative movement in Jordan, which seeks to strengthen the role of cooperatives in enhancing decent work and productivity in different economic sectors in the country. More

Our impact, their voices: Cooperatives promote decent work in Jordan
 
The agricultural sector has the potential for growth and job creation for Jordanian and non-Jordanian workers, yet finding employment without having the right networks is difficult. A new initiative by the ILO under PROSPECTS, is supporting cooperatives to expand their role and provide career guidance and job placement services to workers in the sector. Known as 'Agriculture Guidance and Employment Units', the services also link workers with training opportunities. More

The side event “Overcoming inequalities through the COVID-19 recovery: proposals from the Social and Solidarity Economy and the Right to the City  ” was co-organised by RIPESS , the Global Platform for the Right to the City (GPR2C)  and Urgenci on July 8, 2021. The discussion highlighted concrete examples from multiple domains (informal economy, housing, food production and consumption, basic services and others) from a solidarity-based perspective and under the framework of advancing the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
