ILO COOP 100 Webinar III: Cooperatives for Climate Action
 
The webinar was organized on the eve of the International Day of Cooperatives (IDC), on 3 July 2020, as the third edition in a series of webinars around the Centenary of ILO’s Cooperatives Unit. In line with the theme of the IDC 2020, Cooperatives for Climate Action, the webinar aimed at sharing experiences of cooperatives in climate mitigation and adaptation and discussing how to tap into their full potential in building greener, more resilient and more sustainable economies. It brought together over 140 participants from around the world. More

The UNTFSSE virtual event: “What role for the Social and Solidarity Economy in the post COVID-19 crisis recovery?”
 
The United Nations Inter-agency Task Force on Social and Solidarity Economy (UNTFSSE) organized a virtual event on “What role for the Social and Solidarity Economy in the post COVID-19 crisis recovery?” on 10 July 2020 between 15:30 and 17:00 (CEST). The speakers elaborated upon the transformative role SSE can play, in a pluralist economy – in pursuing the SDGs and highlighted the need to unlock its potential to tackle the current structural economic, societal, social and environmental crises. ILO COOP contributed a video message to a side event at the HLPF organized by the ICA on resilience of cooperatives in times of crisis
 
The virtual event on “Cooperatives: A resilient model in time of crisis and beyond”  took place on July 16, 2020. The event aimed to highlight how cooperatives contribute toward building resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the reconstruction beyond. It highlighted the role cooperatives play in re-activating local economies, providing assistance to the most vulnerable and advocating for their members with public and private actors. More

ILO COOP Chiefs across time: Thiecouta Sidibe (1931-2003), Chief of ILO COOP from 1973 to 1980
 
Thiecouta Sidibe was the seventh ILO COOP Branch Chief who served in this position from 1973 to 1980. A Senegalese national he worked in the ILO Lagos and ILO Yaounde offices before joining ILO COOP. His last position at the ILO was as the Director of the International Labour Standards Department. He retired from the ILO in 1992 after more than 30 years of service. More

“Top 100 Cooperatives – 2018” aims to disclose the most relevant statistical data relating to the top 100 Portuguese cooperatives according to turnover and the top 20 credit cooperatives according to net assets. It also presents top five cooperatives by branch, among which are cooperatives that, following the criteria chosen for the purpose of the report, do not belong to the Top 100 list, but whose presentation allows a concrete view of the diversity and richness of the cooperative landscape in Portugal. More

Information Report from the French Senate on Corporate Social Responsibility
 
The French Senate’s information report on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) that came out on June 25, 2020 highlights the growing awareness across different types and sizes of enterprises in France on their social and environmental responsibilities. The report includes a section on cooperatives, mutuals and other social and solidarity economy (SSE) enterprises. It emphasizes that cooperatives and wider SSE enterprises are often based on mutualism and concerns for the well-being of society. See report in French here.

Mina Waki
 
Mina Waki, who had joined ILO COOP as a technical officer in April 2017 completed her three year and four-month secondment from JCCU. During her time at ILO COOP she supported the Unit’s work in areas of communication, knowledge generation, and training. She also followed up on the partnership with the Japanese cooperative movement, including through co-organizing the annual ILO-JCCU African Cooperative Leaders’ Study Tour and workshops on cooperative-to-cooperative trade. More
