The ILO SSE Academy in Madrid highlights the potential of the SSE in shaping the future of work for all
 
The 11th edition of the ILO Academy on Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) was organized under the theme “Social Economy in the Future of Work” in partnership with the Ministry of Labour, Migration and Social Security of Spain. Over 350 participants from 40 countries participated and exchanged on challenges and good practices in promoting decent work and sustainable development through SSE. The Academy was concluded with a manifesto signed by the Ministry of Labour of Spain, the Spanish Social Economy Employers’ Confederation (CEPES), and the ILO on the role of SSE in the future of work.

The SSE Momentum: Finance for Inclusion and the Future of Work
 
This international conference will be organized by the ILO in Trento, Italy from 18 to 20 November 2019 to present the findings from two international research projects:
  • “Contribution of the SSE and of Social Finance to the Future of Work”, conducted by HIVA and sponsored by the Government of France
  • “Financial Mechanisms for Innovative SSE Ecosystems”, conducted by EURICSE and sponsored by the Government of Luxemburg
The conference will bring together over one hundred researchers, policymakers and SSE experts and practitioners to discuss how to translate the findings into a shared research and policy agenda. While participation at this event is on an invitation-only basis due to logistic constraints, all plenary sessions will be streamed live on YouTube. The materials of the conference including the programme will be available on the official website.

Portuguese version of Think.Coop & Start.Coop
 
In addition to English, French, Spanish and Turkish versions, Portuguese version of the ILO’s Think.Coop – an orientation tool on the cooperative business model – and Start.Coop – a step-by-step guide on launching a cooperative in a participatory manner – are now available. Based on activity-based learning methodology, the training tools aim to support workers, especially those in the informal economy, to increase their economic opportunities through cooperation. More
 
SADA Women’s Cooperative in Turkey strengthens capacity of its members
 
Within the framework of the project ‘Strengthening the resilience of Syrian women and girls and host communities’, 50 members of SADA Women’s Cooperative participated in a training workshop on the financial management of a cooperative. Representatives of the cooperative also participated in a training session on rights at work and gender equality. More

ILO participates in a meeting on platform cooperatives in Brussels
 
ILO Cooperatives Unit Manager participated in the Platform Coop Brussels held at the European Committee of Regions as a speaker and reflected on how to ensure workers’ rights in the platform economy, including through worker cooperative ownership of digital platforms. More
 
ILO presents international trends on worker cooperative development at the 2019 Co-op IMPACT Conference in Washington
 
Organized by the National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA CLUSA), the 3rd Co-op IMPACT Conference brought together 400 participants from close to 200 organizations to discuss how cooperatives, as member-owned and principle-driven enterprises, can build a stable, inclusive and sustainable economy. An ILO official participated as a speaker at a panel on “Scalability of the Worker Co-op Model”. More
 
ILO participates in the Forum on Cooperative Platforms in Paris
 
The Forum was organized by La Coop des Communs to network emerging cooperative platforms focused on bringing economic benefits and positive externalities in local communities and to identify common challenges and opportunities. A representative from ILO Cooperatives Unit participated in a panel on the measurement of positive externalities brought by these new models of platforms. More
 
African cooperative leaders share their observations on the 10th ILO-JCCU Study Tour
 
The study tour was co-organized by the ILO and the Japanese Consumers’ Cooperative Union (JCCU) with five cooperative leaders from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Nigeria. They visited a range of cooperative enterprises in Japan and exchanged knowledge and experiences on improving members’ livelihoods and addressing development challenges through cooperatives. In line with the ILO Centenary Initiative, this year’s study tour highlighted cooperative responses to the key issues in the future of work, such as demographic shifts, technological advances, and climate change. The tour was concluded with a public seminar on cooperatives and the future of work, which brought together over 80 participants. ILO Cooperatives Unit Manager provided a video message to the Eastern Conference for Workplace Democracy in the US on how trade unions and cooperatives can work together to promote decent work for all. More

Key statistics on cooperative banks 2018
 
The European Association of Co-operative Banks, in collaboration with Tilburg University, launched key statistics on cooperative banking in EU for 2018. The report presents a concise overview of the main financial metrics of the co-operative banking sector. According to this study, one in every five European citizens is a member of a cooperative bank. The market share of cooperative banks for SME financing is 30 per cent on average, and in some countries like Finland, France, Germany and the Netherlands, it is even higher. More
 
 
WOCCU 2018 Statistical Report shows substantial growth of credit unions
 
The international credit union movement added more than 14 million members in 2018 to reach a new high of more than 274 million in 118 countries, according to World Council of Credit Unions’ newly released 2018 Statistical Report.
