ILO organizes training of trainers on the cooperative business model towards strengthening the fishery sector in Mauritania
 
Within the framework of the project “PROPECHE: Creation of decent jobs and consolidation of existing employment for young and potential migrants in the artisanal fisheries sector”, a training of trainers’ workshop was organized in Nouakchott, Mauritania using ILO’s cooperative development tools – Think.Coop, Start.Coop and My.Coop. The project aims to contribute to regional stability and better management of migration by increasing economic opportunities for young people in the artisanal fishing sector in the coastal regions of Nouakchott and Nouadhibou.

LEED+: Towards inclusive growth strategies for the conflict-affected communities in Sri Lanka
 
The ILO’s programme “LEED+” (Local Empowerment through Economic Development and Reconciliation) was launched in September 2018 in Sri Lanka with the objective of promoting inclusive growth strategies for the conflict-affected communities in the Northern and North-Central provinces. The initiative builds on more than eight years of work and was made possible through joint funding mainly from Australia, Norway and United Nations Peacebuilding Fund. In order to review the work plan and identify key future activities, a series of meetings were held between the ILO officials and key stakeholders including tripartite constituents, cooperative support institutions, beneficiaries and representatives of project donors. More
 
5th call for proposals: Professional integration of young people through civil society associations in Algeria
 
As part of the project "A'AMAL: Together for the employability and professional integration of young people in Annaba and Khenchela", the ILO launched the 5th call for proposals to support community projects in favour of employability enhancement, professional integration, and entrepreneurship promotion among youth in Annaba and Khenchela, Algeria. More

South Africa introduces a law to defeat bogus cooperatives which exploit workers
 
The Cooperative Amendment Act, No. 6 of 2013 became effective on 1 April 2019 in South Africa. Members of worker cooperatives in South Africa had been legally considered self-employed, making them exempt from minimum wages and labour standards. The legislation now requires all worker cooperatives to comply with labour legislation. The Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers’ Union has welcomed the move. More
 
 
National Council of Cooperatives is established in the Republic of Korea
 
After five years of preparation, the National Council of Cooperatives was established in the Republic of Korea as the largest national cooperative association that brings together 845 cooperatives and three sectoral cooperative federations. More
 
 
Launch of the UN Decade of Family Farming and a Global Action Plan
 
The UN Decade of Family Farming and a Global Action plan 2019-2028 was launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to boost support for family farmers, who represent over 90 percent of all farms globally, and produce 80 percent of the world's food in value terms. Strengthening family farmers’ organizations including cooperatives is one of the seven pillars of the Global Action Plan. More
 
 
Right to own: A policy framework to catalyse worker ownership transitions
 
Published by the Next System Project of the Democracy Collaborative, a US research institute, this paper reviews policy framework and legislative history of existing worker ownership models and describes a set of institutions and laws that allows transition to democratic worker ownership of sites and companies. More
