Strengthening cooperatives in Jordan to improve livelihoods and to advance decent work for Jordanian workers and Syrian refugees
 
Drawing on the earlier work and pilot interventions, the ILO will further strengthen cooperatives in Jordan within the framework of a new Dutch-funded project on advancing decent work for Jordanian workers and Syrian refugees in the agriculture sector.

Think.Coop rolled out in Cape Verde
 
Within the framework of the Programme for the Promotion of Rural Socioeconomic Opportunities (POSER) co-funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment of Cape Verde and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Coopermondo, an international development cooperation of the Confederation of the Italian Cooperatives, carried out training of agricultural cooperatives using the ILO’s Think.Coop training tool. Participants reflected the basic of cooperatives and analysed how forming a cooperative can help them improve their work and livelihoods. More
 
Towards building a coherent strategy of cooperative development in the Andean Region
 
The ILO is conducting a comprehensive study on cooperatives and producers’ organizations in Colombia and Peru with a view to developing a strategy that supports the creation of an enabling environment for cooperative enterprises. More
 
The 10th Edition of the ILO Academy on Social and Solidarity Economy – A human-centred agenda for the future of work
 
The registration for the 10th ILO Social and Solidarity Economy Academy is now open. This edition will take place in Turin, Italy from 3-7 July 2019. On the occasion of the ILO’s Centenary, this Academy will focus on the challenges and opportunities posed by the changing world of work. Deadline for registration is 30 April 2019. More

The ILO, as the chair of the United Nations Inter-Agency Task Force on the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE), participated in an international conference on the role of SSE in implementing and localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) co-hosted by the Institution for Poverty Alleviation and International Development of Yonsei University (IPAID) of Korea, the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in the Republic of Korea. GSEF: Promoting the social and solidarity economy for human-centred development
 
“Spotlight Interviews with Co-operators” is a series of interviews with co-operators from around the world with whom ILO officials have crossed paths during the course of their work on cooperatives and the wider social and solidarity economy (SSE). On this occasion, ILO interviewed Ms Laurence Kwark, Secretary General of the Global Social Economy Forum (GSEF), an international association of local governments and civil society networks engaged in the promotion of the SSE as a means of achieving inclusive and sustainable local development. GSEF is also one of the observers of the UN Inter-Agency Task Force on SSE. More

A quantum leap for gender equality: For a better future of work for all
 
Prepared as part of the ILO’s Women at Work Centenary Initiative, this new report explores the structural barriers, including unpaid care work, that shape the nature and extent of women’s engagement in paid employment. It examines how laws, policies and practices in certain countries have addressed these barriers. The role of cooperatives and the wider social and solidarity economy in women empowerment was reflected in the report notably in creating jobs and increasing income for women workers; providing basic services including childcare; and boosting women’s leadership experiences. The people behind the prices: A focused human rights impact assessment of SOK Corporation’s Italian processed tomato supply chains
 
Carried out by Oxfam and S Group, a Finnish retailing cooperative organization, this study assesses the actual and potential human rights impacts at the production stage of SOK Corporation’s Italian processed tomato supply chains, particularly the use of illegal workers and the poor housing conditions of the migrant workers in Southern Italy. S Group aims to take next steps to mitigate the problems. More
 
 
Cooperatives and peace: Strengthening democracy, participation and trust
 
Presenting practical examples, this report by Cooperatives Europe looks at cooperatives contributing to the empowerment of minority groups affected by conflict, providing decent work and sustainable development in fragile contexts, as well as supporting mitigation of conflict through partnerships with other actors and the provision of humanitarian support. Building resiliency through green infrastructure: A community wealth building approach
 
This report by the Democracy Collaborative looks at how workers’ cooperatives and social enterprises can put green infrastructure in place to mitigate the effects of climate change and help neighbourhoods plan for droughts and floods. More
