Sri Lanka’s first ever ‘eco-recommended’ fisheries
 
With the support of the ILO Local Empowerment through Economic Development (LEED) project funded by the Australian government, two blue swimming crab fisheries in Sri Lanka became the country’s first ever ‘eco-recommended’ fishery sites. The five-year long collaborative efforts involved the local seafood industry, government agencies and fishery cooperatives.

A key step taken towards developing a social economy policy in South Africa
 
A draft Green Paper on a social economy policy was presented at a national consultation conference in Sandton, South Africa. In a speech to the conference, ILO Director-General Guy Ryder reflected on the relevance of social and solidarity economy organizations and their value-driven, human-centred approaches to addressing the emerging challenges in the changing world of work. A youth cooperative launched to develop the honey value chain in northwestern Tunisia
 
As part of the Dutch-funded project on Promotion of Organizations and Mechanisms of Social and Solidarity Economy (PROMESS) in Tunisia, the ILO has supported a group of young students and graduates to launch a cooperative for the production and marketing of honey and its derivatives such as soaps, candles, and cosmetics. More
 
Roll out of Think.Coop and Start.Coop with Cambodian agricultural cooperatives
 
The Government of Cambodia is strengthening agricultural cooperatives using the ILO’s training tools with a view to improving livelihoods of workers and producers in the rural economy. More
 
Start.Coop rolled out with young entrepreneurs and return migrants in Senegal
 
Coopermondo, an association for international development cooperation furthered by the Confederation of the Italian Cooperatives (Confcooperative), organized training sessions in Kaffrine, Senegal using the ILO’s Start.Coop training programme. The training helped young entrepreneurs in the development of their business plans as part of the POINTI project aimed at addressing root causes of migration in Senegal and Ethiopia through the promotion of employment of women and youth. The project, co-funded by the Italian Ministry of Interior, mobilized a wide range of partners, consisting of 20 Italian and international NGOs, diaspora associations, grassroots organizations, and cooperatives to strengthen the resilience of communities at high migration risk. More
 
Theme of 2019 International Day of Cooperatives is cooperatives for decent work
 
Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC), currently chaired by the ILO, announced that “cooperatives for decent work” (coops4decentwork) is the theme of this year’s International Day of Cooperatives. The theme is linked to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8 on decent work and economic growth for all. Celebrated on the first Saturday of July each year, this year’s International Day of Cooperatives falls on 6 July. COPAC will be organizing an observance of the 2019 IDC at the United Nations in New York in July. More

New ILO publications and other noteworthy resources
 
 
Turkish version of Think.Coop
 
In addition to English, Spanish and French versions, the Turkish version of the ILO’s Think.Coop training tool is now available here. The tool was finalized after a pilot test with youth in Seferihisar, Turkey in partnership with the municipality in October 2018. Think.Coop is a 6-hour module providing simple information on the basics and benefits of cooperation to improve livelihoods opportunities. Turkish version of Start.Coop, another training tool to launch a cooperative in a participatory manner, will be available soon. Also, Arabic versions of Think.Coop and Start.Coop will soon be coming. More

WIEGO: SWaCH Cooperative’s pro-poor waste management model in India
 
Worker members of SWaCH, a cooperative established by a waste pickers’ trade union Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat (KKPKP) in India, collects waste door-to-door for a fee that each household directly pays to the workers, based on a partnership agreement with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
