The International Conference of Labour Statisticians adopts guidelines on statistics of cooperatives
 
On October 18, 2018, the Guidelines concerning Statistics on Cooperatives were adopted at the 20th International Conference of Labour Statisticians. The delegates from across regions as well as workers’ and employers’ delegates welcomed the draft guidelines and voted for their adoption at the ILO Headquarters in Geneva. A number of country representatives also echoed their support for conducting pilot-testing of the guidelines and expressed their willingness to participate in the process.

Syrian women refugees and host country nationals explore the potential of the cooperative model in income generation and building solidarity in Turkey
 
Within the framework of “Strengthening the Resilience of Syrian Women and Girls and Host Communities” project jointly implemented by the ILO, UN Women and Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants (SGDD-ASAM), the ILO organized a seminar on the role of cooperatives in income generation activities with Syrian, Afghan and Turkish women.​​​​​​ More
 
Cooperative leaders from Francophone African countries exchanged knowledge and experiences with Japanese co-operators
 
The 9th edition of the ILO/Japanese Consumers’ Cooperative Union (JCCU) African Cooperative Leaders’ Study Tour took place in Japan, which focused on Francophone African countries for the first time since its inception. Cooperative representatives from Côte d'Ivoire, Tunisia, and Cameroon participated in the study tour to explore Japanese cooperatives’ activities across a range of sectors and exchanged knowledge and experiences with Japanese co-operators. More
 
Think.COOP training organized with university students in Turkey
 
The ILO’s Think.COOP training programme was implemented with the students of Afyon Kocatepe University Business Club, with the facilitation of Youth Deal Cooperative partners, within the scope of the Social Cooperative Education and Promotion Train activities. More
 
The GB document on development cooperation programme for the occupied Arab territories mentions the ILO’s technical support on cooperative development
 
The document for the 334th Session of the ILO Governing Body on development cooperation programme for the occupied Arab territories highlights ongoing ILO initiatives to enhance employment and livelihoods, including technical support on a new governance system for cooperatives in line with the Cooperative Law adopted in November 2017. In particular, the ILO has supported development of the new Cooperative Sector Strategy and creation of a detailed roadmap and proposal for the establishment of the Cooperative Works Agency (CWA) as a centre of regulation and promotional services for cooperatives. The ILO will also continue to provide technical assistance for the establishment of a General Commission for Regulating Cooperatives, an associated Training Institute and a Cooperative Fund. ILO participates and contributes to the General Assembly and the Americas Summit of the ICA
 
ILO’s Enterprises Department Director Vic Van Vuuren participated in the General Assembly of the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) held in Buenos Aires, Argentina in October 2018. The ILO also contributed a video message to the Summit of the Cooperatives of the Americas on the future of work. More
 
ILO shares its work on SSE at GSEF 2018
 
The 4th edition of the Global Social Economy Forum (GSEF) was organized in Bilbao, Spain by the Bilbao Metropolitan Government in partnership with Laboral Kutxa, a Basque credit union; Mondragon Corporation, a Basque worker cooperatives’ federation; and the Basque Government. The ILO contributed with a speaker at the second plenary session on the role of SSE in addressing emerging challenges in cities as well as by organizing a workshop on SSE and the future of work where the experiences from an ILO project on SSE in Tunisia were shared. Call for proposals: Good practices on addressing pseudo-cooperative practices in labour intermediation
 
The ILO COOP Unit is looking for a consultant to prepare a report on good practices in combatting unlawful labour intermediation practices by pseudo-worker cooperatives in different countries and sectors across the globe. The deadline for submission of application is 5 November 2018. More
 
 
Spanish version of Think.COOP and Start.COOP
 
In addition to the English version, Spanish version of the ILO’s Think.COOP and Start.COOP training tools are now available. They are being rolled out in Peru and Bolivia between October and December 2018. Drawing on technical content from existing ILO cooperative training tools and peer-to-peer, activity-based learning methodology from the ILO’s Community-Based Enterprise Development (C-BED) programme, the training tools aim to help those interested in improving businesses through cooperation understand the basics and benefits of the cooperative model and establish a cooperative in a participatory manner. More
