| ILO organizes a meeting on cooperatives and trade |

| The 2018 International Day of Cooperatives (IDC) is being celebrated on the 7th of July with a focus on SDG12 - “Sustainable consumption and production”. On this occasion the ILO brought together the cooperative movement and fair and ethical trade initiatives to share examples of cooperatives promoting SDG12 and decent work though coop-to-coop trade and explore expanding upon intervention models that enhance cooperatives’ role in advancing fairer and responsible global supply chains. |

| ILO partners with Platform Cooperativism Consortium to support development of platform cooperatives in Global South |
| |
| The Platform Cooperativism Consortium (PCC) has launched a project to advance development of cooperatives in the digital economy, particularly by designing open source tools to support development of platform cooperatives in sectors such as childcare, eldercare, home services, and recycling. The ILO has coordinated with Professor Trebor Scholz at The New School in New York, the founder of PCC and the project leader, to connect the initiative with cooperatives in India, the Republic of Korea, Brazil and Turkey, among others. | Call for applications: 9th ILO/JCCU Study Tour for African Cooperative Leaders in Japan, 15-24 October |
| |
| Since 2010, the ILO and the Japanese Consumers’ Co-operative Union (JCCU) have collaborated on a study tour to support the African cooperative leaders to strengthen their capacities through exchanging knowledge and experiences with Japanese cooperatives. As the participants of the previous study tours were mostly from Anglophone countries, this year five African cooperative leaders from Francophone countries will be invited to Japan to participate in the study tour. Applications are now open, with a deadline of 5 August 2018. More information on the study tour, including on how to apply, can be found on the ILO website in French and English. |

| The Co-operative Economy 2018 |

| The report, published annually by Co-operatives UK, is the nation’s only comprehensive report on the UK’s cooperative sector. It reveals that the UK's 7,226 cooperatives have a combined turnover of £36.1 billion - up more than £800 million on 2017 levels - and 13.1 million cooperative memberships. The latest figures also reveal that cooperative start-ups are almost twice as likely to survive their first five years when compared to companies. More |

Ms Annelien Gansemans left ILO COOP on 30 June, to finish her PhD on plantation workers’ livelihoods in the pineapple sector of Costa Rica. She contributed to a wide range of the Unit’s work, particularly on developing training tools for cooperatives to improve compliance with decent work standards, especially on the child labour issues.
